I got asked so much about this that I just had to put together a blog post with an overview of natural laundry detergent options. Have you wanted to try out a more natural laundry solution but did not know where to start? Do you have sensitivities in you family, but are afraid that moving away from your current detergent would leave you with stained, dingy clothes?

You are a thorough product tester and an engaging writer. I read your post about ECOVER auto dish detergent. Natural and green, huh? Is ECOVER really that much different than FINISH Powder, for example? ECOVER INGREDIENTS: Sodium citrate, Sodium carbonate peroxide, Sodium carbonate, Disodium disilicate, Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium polyasparaginate, TAED, Sorbitol, Sorbitan sesquioctanoate, Caprylyl/capryl glucoside, Glycerin, Subtilisin, Amylase, Sodium gluconate. FINISH INGREDIENTS: Sodium carbonate, Sodium sulfate, Sodium citrate, Sodium silicate, Sodium carbonate peroxide, Alcohol ethoxylate, Sodium polyacrylate, TAED, Fragrance, Subtilisin, Kaolin, Titanium dioxide, Polyethylene glycol, Microcrystalline cellulose, Amylase. As a chemist I see little difference, other than ECOVER lacking a few useful but not essential ingredients. There is a staggering amount of misinformation on the internet regarding “natural” products. Don’t fall victim to the assertions of manufacturers. They’re all out to make money, even the “natural” ones.

Thanks for the comment, Jim!
Are you comparing Ecover tabs to Finish powder? The Ecover powder does not contain TAED, so it would probably be better to compare tabs to tabs, such as these: http://www.ewg.org/guides/cleaners/6093-FINISHQuantumMaxPowerballAutomaticDishwasherDetergent
That being said, the reason I can’t use Finish and other conventional detergents is the scent. It is VERY strong, and it lingers. The Ecover, on the other hand, leaves behind no scent. As a chemist you probably have a better idea of just how good/bad for you artificial fragrances are, but I personally prefer not to ingest them.
